More Visits from Parents in Ganon Aleph

Zac N.'s mom came in this week to make ice cream with the children - from scratch!  It was an exciting and scientific process shaking the bag and watching the liquid ingredients turn into solid ice cream.  We have the recipe for anyone who is interested in trying this at home.

We were also happy to welcome Maya's dad who is a urologist, and Maya's mom who is a nurse, who came to talk to the children about our bodies.  Maya's mom showed the children the different instruments she uses to examine patients, and demonstrated on Maya's dad how they are used!  Maya's dad reminded the children how important it is to go to the bathroom when they feel the need, and not to hold it in.

Family members are always welcome in Ganon Aleph!!

Ganon Aleph Parents Come to Visit

As our unit on the human body continues, several parents who happen to be in the medical field came to visit our class and talk about their specialties.

Avital's mom, an ophthamologist, talked to the class about our eyes, and also made "body" cookies with the children.

Zach F.'s dad, an allergist, talked to the children about allergies, and even demonstrated on Zach's mom's arm how to do an allergy test!

Gabi Z.'s mom, a science teacher at Yavneh, did some experiments to teach the children about breathing.

Ezra's dad, a gastroenterologist, talked to the children about digestion and about the job of our intestines.  He also talked about not putting objects in your mouth because you might swallow them, and showed the children some tools he uses to remove these objects when they are swallowed.

Donny's dad, a nephrologist, used a filter and some fake blood to help explain what our kidneys do for us.  He showed the children a model of the kidneys, and gave them their own squeezable kidneys to bring home.  He also gave us an "Asher Yatzar" wall hanging for our classroom, the important bracha we say after we go to the bathroom to thank Hashem that our bodies our working right.

Jakie's mom, who works at the Rockleigh Home, came to talk to the children about working with elderly people.  She explained that music is great therapy for elderly people and showed us a video of elderly people playing instruments.

We love when parents come to our classroom, and we look forward to more visits after vacation!

Doctors and Nurses in Ganon Aleph

As a follow-up to our study of the human body, two of our Ganon Aleph parents who are in the medical field came
 to talk to our class.  Julia's dad, Dr. Barr,came to talk to the children about their bones. He showed us a model of a skeleton, a knee cap, and 
some x-rays.







Moshe's mom came in to talk about her work as a nurse.  She showed the children how to measure their blood pressure, and made a special chart for us to keep in our  classroom.

Training for Medical School in Ganon Aleph and Bet

The children in both Ganon classes have been learning all about the human body.  We talked about the heart, veins, and arteries, and used a latex glove filled with red water to demonstrate how the heart works.  The children took turns pumping the "heart" and watching the "blood" flow out.

When we discussed the digestive system, each child received a ziploc bag designed as the stomach.  The children then mashed together an assortment of foods and drinks in order to visualize what happens in the stomach.

As they learned about the different bodily systems, each child added the corresponding internal organs onto their body puppets.  The children in Ganon Aleph and Ganon Bet  have a greater appreciation of how our bodies work, and are now ready for medical school!!

Dr. Fein visits Ganon Bet

One who walked into Ganon Bet today may have thought that they were entering the Doctor's office. Dr. Fein, Zachary's Dad, is a Pediatric Emergency Room Doctor. Dr. Fein explained to us what parts of the body he checks to make sure that children are healthy. He listens to their heart with a stethescope, he checks their ears with an odoscope, and looks into their throats with a tongue depressor and special light! He even showed us a mask that people wear is they need medicine that they can't eat or swallow. The children each had their ears checked out by Dr. Fein as well as their throats. Thank god we have very healthy children.

We also had a chance to look at real X-Rays on our projector . We saw broken bones as well as what happens when children swallow non food items. We even got stickers for being such great patients!

Learning More About Our Bodies in Ganon Aleph

As a culmination to our unit on the human body, Dr. Jacoby, Pacey's mom, came in to talk to us about our bodies. She showed us the different instruments she uses for taking and checking blood, and other tools she uses in her work. Pacey tied a tourniquet on his mom's arm to show the children how it helps a doctor see the veins more easily. The children had a chance to listen to each other's heart with a real stethoscope.

We love when moms and dads come in to share their time with us!

Our Beating Hearts

Our unit on the human body continued this week when we talked about the heart, veins, and arteries. The children felt their hearts beating rapidly after they ran in place and put their hands on their hearts. They got to listen to their hearts through a real stethoscope. We used a latex glove filled with red water to demonstrate how the heart works. The children took turns pumping the "heart" and watching the "blood" flow out. They learned that the blood flows throughout the body through our veins and arteries. Ask them to show you their veins!

Ganon Aleph Doctors Teach Us About Our Bodies

As part of our study of the human body, Dr. Horowitz (Amira's mom) came to talk to the children about their eyes. She showed us diagrams of the eyes and spoke about how to take care of them. She also reminded the children not to run around with sharp objects! On Thursday, Dr. Borgen (Ezra's dad) came to talk to us about our hearts. He showed us a heart which didn't pump properly because of a blocked artery, and then we saw Ezra's healthy heart in an ultrasound. He then explained to the children how important healthy food and exercise are for keeping our hearts healthy.

Flexing Our Muscles

This week, the morot in Ganon Bet filled the sand table with rice and beans. They added cups and clothespins, challenging the children to pick up the beans with the clothespins. This fun and effective exercise prepared those small muscles for writing!

The children are also learning about differing abilities. Rebecca and Shalom are further challenged to pick out beans without the use of one hand (Rebecca) or vision (Shalom). It was a great way to learn about the wonderful body that Hashem has given each of us, and the many ways that we can use it to help us get along in the world.

Ganon Bet Learns About Their Bodies

In our discussion of the human body this week, we learned that our body is made up of cells. Our bodies are covered by skin, epidermis. Our skin can be light or dark. Inside our bodies we have a skeleton which is made up of many large and small bones. Our skeleton gives our body shape. Without our skeleton we would collapse like a rag doll. We also learned that our muscles are like rubber bands. They stretch and pull our bones up and down.We experimented with rubber bands to demonstrate the concept of how our muscles actually work.
