Me And My Shadow

Gan Daled learned about the great artist, Rembrandt, who lived in Holland. He is known for his use of light and shadows. Rembrandt painted many self portraits. The children used charcoal to make their own self portraits which resembled Rembrandt's etchings. Even though charcoal is difficult to work with, the children used their fine motor skills to produce beautiful self portraits in Rembrandt's style.

Gan Daled became print makers and discovered that it is possible to make many copies from a single master. They engraved pictures into a piece of foam to make a plate and covered it with paint. Next, the children put a piece of paper on the plate and pressed down carefully. When they lifted the paper off the plate they had a lovely print of their work. The class noticed that everything on the print was reversed.

Ganon Aleph Makes Snowman Cookies

In honor of the official beginning of winter, Liraz's mom came to help the children make delicious snowman cookies.

We love when mommies and daddies come in to help us in Ganon Aleph!

Yocheved's Mom Comes to Ganon Aleph

Yocheved's mom, who happens to be an optometrist, came to talk to the children about our eyes.  She read "The Berenstain Bears Go to the Doctor" by Stan and Jan Berenstain, and gave our class the book as a gift!  She then talked about the different parts of the eye, and gave the children eyes to color and some popping eyeballs to bring home!  Thank you to Dr. Nagel for taking time out of your busy day to come and spend time with our class!

Our unit on the human body will continue over the next couple of weeks.  Any parents or grandparents who are in the medical field are welcome to come to talk to the children about how our bodies work.

Details, Details....

Gan Bet is learning many new things about Shabbat.
Did you know that there is a measurements called a revi'it?

It's really important for Kiddush!

It measures at about a shot-glass and a half. We tested out the measurement to see if it would be alright for us to use different types of cups for Kiddush...

Look, we can even use a snack cup for Kiddush!

What's Cookin', Good Lookin'?

Baking bread is quite easy when you're handed the ingredients, but not so in Gan Bet...

Where is the yeast?!

It was quite the challenge as the children in Gan Bet explored many different grains, legumes, and herbs to find the yeast particles hiding within...

We had to work our fine motor muscles really hard to find the yeast.
FINALLY, we found it!

We were so thrilled that we decided to bake challah with the yeast to celebrate our unit on Shabbat!

Hmmm...but now how to make the challah....

We tried to create our own baking sequence...

...and then we "hopped to it!"

We hope it turns out good!

Making Bricks in Ganon Aleph

In this week's Parashat Shemot
we learn that Pharoah forced the Jewish slaves to make bricks.  The children in Ganon Aleph tried to make their own bricks out of dirt, grass, and water in milk carton molds.  They really enjoyed this messy, tactile experience!

Gan Bet's Publishing Party!

Congratulations Gan Bet!
Our class has published over 60 amazing short stories with each child publishing two or more!
The children worked very hard to get to this special celebration and they were so excited to share their published works with their friends!
After introducing each author and the two stories they chose to share at the party, they split up into groups to read to each other and enjoy a themed snack of ABC letter cookies!

Ganon Aleph Makes an Edible Parasha Treat

In honor of Parashat Shemot, Ganon Aleph made an edible "teivah" out of Chinese noodles and melted chocolate, with a tiny marshmallow baby Moshe inside!  Thank you to Charlie and Gabriella's mom for helping the children create these delicious Shabbat treats!

Fun in the Snow

Ganon Aleph bundled up and headed for the hills this week.  Please enjoy some pictures of us having fun in the snow!
