A Visit from our Local Firefighters

In honor of Fire Prevention Month, the children in Ganon Aleph were excited to meet some representatives from the Paramus Fire Department who came to Yavneh this week.

Firefighter Joe explained some fire safety rules to the children.  He showed them Mr. Nose, the smoke detector that every home should have to smell smoke.  He told them what to do in case of a real fire, and reminded them to dial 9-1-1 only in case of an emergency.

Firefighter Kevin dressed up in his fire gear and explained how it keeps him safe.  Afterwards, the children thanked our firefighters for keeping us safe!

A HOT TIME IN GAN DALED

Adam and his Dad

At this time of the year, when fire is so important to us, Amir Brandwein, Adam's father came to Gan Daled. Adam's father is a volunteer firefighter. He dressed in his firefighter clothes and even put on his mask and gloves for us.

Adam denostrating Stop, Drop, and Roll
Adam's dad spoke to the class about fire safety, particularly when chanukiyot are lit. Mr Brandwein told us that if your clothes catch on fire you should, "stop, drop and roll". Adam demonstrated the proper procedure for us.

Let's all be careful this week.

Science in Ganon Aleph

Chanukah has provided many opportunities for science in our classroom. The children learned about the scientific concept of "wax resist" when they water-colored over "invisible" designs they drew with candles. They saw that oil and water do not mix when we poured oil into a bottle of water with blue food coloring. Before our last experiment we asked the children how we could extinguish a flame. They came up with the following: blow it out, let it burn out, use water or a fire extinguisher, or call the firefighters! We tried using sand to put out a small flame, and then we placed a jar over a lit candle and watched it go out all by itself! The children learned that fire needs oxygen to burn, and the candle went out when the oxygen in the jar was all used up. We then went on to talk about fire safety rules like "stop, drop, and roll" and what to do in case of a fire emergency.
