Gan Daled's Parsha Pastry!

Gan Daled had a blast this week learning about the clothing that the Kohen Gadol wore in the Mishkan. The children learned that the Kohen Gadol wore a special breastplate made of precious stones called a "Choshen". Each stone represented one of the twelve Shevatim. To reinforce this lesson each of the children enjoyed their own edible version at our Shabbat party. What a yummy treat! Shabbat Shalom!

In this week’s parsha, תרומה. Hashem asks Moshe to have Bnei Yisrael build a משכן, a holy dwelling place for him. Moshe asks Bnei Yisrael to contribute gold or silver to help build the משכן. Bnei Yisrael build a special מזבח in the משכן so they can bring קרבנות, animals, as presents to Hashem. They created a מנורה and a שלחן to hold the לחם הפנים, the holy bread. Hashem also told Moshe to build the ארון to have a safe place to keep the לוחות. They carried the משכן with them wherever they went in the desert. We discussed how our homes are permanent, along with our classroom and Yavneh Academy. We come to the same place everyday. When Bnei Yisrael were in the מדבר ,they would move around all of the time so everything had to be portable. That’s why many parts of the משכן  were put together with poles.

We worked as teams to create replicas of the כלים from the משכן. Each group picked from the various materials in our classroom to create their כלי and then worked together using a picture of the כלי to help replicate it to the best of their abilities.

Ganon Bets Makes Scrumptious Treats for Parshat Beshalach-Shabbat Shira

What would you eat if your food could taste like anything? Ganon Bet made delicious Mon cookies that tasted like candy, challah,  and apples.  After learning about how the birds ate the mon that were placed outside on Shabbat, we  made edible birds nests from chow mein noodles and melted chocolate. We placed jelly beans inside the nest too. The children enjoyed the yummy snacks throughout the week.

To show HaKarat HaTov to the birds for eating the Mon, we made bird feeders to be placed outside our homes this Shabbat.

Hachnasat Orchim

Tasty Torah Treats

After learning about the  mitzvah of  Hachnasat Orchim that Avraham Avinu loved to do, Gan Daled was invited to Gan Bet's classroom. Since we (Gan Daled) were the guests, we thought it would be nice to bring something to our hosts. We  brought along a terrific book called, I Go Visiting, by Rikki Benenfeld. The yeladim noticed the ryming pattern in the book and they enjoyed joining in to complete the sentences.

Following the story, Gan Bet shared a delicious snack. Each child made their own tent cookies using chocolate chip cookies, yummy vanilla frosting and brown ice tea crystals to remind us of the desert and a chocolate kiss to resemble a tent. The children not only enjoyed making the scrumptious cookies but enjoyed eating the cookies alongside their friends too!

How Do We Get Water?

In this week's Parsha, we learned how Rivka had to go to  the well to get water for her family. We concluded that long ago there was no indoor plumbing, so they got their water from a  well. This led to a discussion of how we get our water today. One of the children suggested that water comes from pipes! We had a hands – on demonstration and searched the “pipes of Yavneh”. We examined the plumbing system in our classroom and then went down to the “bowels” of the school and saw all of the pipes twisting and turning that carry the water and waste throughout the building. We created our own pipe system with pvc pipes and watched sand flow through the pipes.

After learning about Yaakov's dream in this week's Parsha, we decided it would be fun to build our own ladders from popsicle sticks. We had fun playing with shaving cream clouds in our sky as well. Some of us even pretended to see angels climbing up and down our ladders!
